The NHS/WHO uses BMI (Body Mass Index) to define healthy weight ranges for adults. A healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. The table below lists the healthy weight range for women at every common UK height, given in kilograms, stone and pounds, and pounds. The same BMI formula applies to men and women, so the ranges in this chart are calculated from the same NHS/WHO thresholds. What makes this chart useful for women specifically is the height range covered, which spans from 5ft 0in through to 6ft 2in with the ranges most relevant to female height distribution in the UK.

How to Use This Chart

Find your height in the left column. The minimum and maximum columns give the NHS/WHO healthy weight range for that height. If your weight falls between the minimum and maximum, your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, which is the healthy range. If your weight is below the minimum, the BMI is below 18.5, which is underweight. If your weight is above the maximum, the BMI is above 24.9, which is overweight or higher.

๐Ÿฉบ Doctor's Note

"BMI is the NHS/WHO standard screening tool for assessing weight in adults, and this chart reflects those ranges accurately. It is worth knowing that BMI does not account for how weight is distributed around the body, and it can give misleading results for very muscular individuals or older adults who may carry less muscle mass. If your weight falls outside the healthy range on this chart, a conversation with your GP is the most useful next step, as they can assess the full picture alongside the number."

Why BMI ranges are the same for men and women

The BMI formula does not have separate thresholds for men and women. The healthy range of 18.5 to 24.9 applies to all adults regardless of sex. However, research shows that women and men tend to distribute body fat differently at the same BMI, and some studies suggest women may carry slightly more body fat at a given BMI than men of the same reading. This does not change the NHS/WHO thresholds used in this chart, but it is worth knowing when interpreting individual BMI results with a GP.
